Marubeni Corporation has successfully completed a 5 million USD investment in Altilium Metals Ltd. (hereinafter, “Altilium”) through a third-party allocation of new shares. Altilium is currently in the process of developing a lithium-ion battery (hereafter, “LiB”) recycling business in the UK.        

Project Features

- Altilium operates a small-scale pilot plant in Plymouth, UK, which recycles LiBs used in EVs to produce low-carbon, sustainable recycled materials such as sulphate for use in battery materials.

- As part of its medium- to long-term plan, Altilium aims to achieve large-scale commercialization by building a production plant capable of processing 150,000 EV-equivalent LiBs in Teesside, UK.

- The goal of the Altilium project is to establish an EV closed-loop supply chain in the UK that covers everything from LiB collection to the manufacture of battery materials.

Significance and Future Prospects of the Project
Under its Mid-Term Management Strategy, GC2024, Marubeni has positioned green strategy as its basic policy for improving corporate value. By promoting the LiB recycling business, which is expected to grow in line with the spread of EVs, Marubeni will contribute to the transition to a decarbonized society while building a sustainable, circular supply chain for rare metals, which are becoming increasingly important from the perspective of economic security. Altilium and Marubeni concluded a memorandum of understanding in July 2023, and will continue to promote the development of LiB recycling businesses in the UK as strategic partners.
