Marubeni Corporation

Marubeni Corporation’s fully owned subsidiary, Mibugawa Power Company, held the opening ceremony today for a small hydro power plant named Tateshina No.2 Power Station that has completed construction in December 2013 and commenced commercial operation from 15 January 2014 in Chino City, Nagano Prefecture.

The plant is installed in the facility of Takinoyu Dam Land Improvement District Agricultural Waterway that locates next to Sibukawa Ohashi in Itokaya Ku, Chino City, Nagano Prefecture. Maintenance activity for the plant expects to be streamlined as Tateshina No.1 Power Station that commenced commercial operation from June 2011 is located in the same waterway.
Expected annual power generation will cover the annual power consumption of 270 ordinary houses and the generated power will be sold for over 20 years under Japan's feed-in-tariff scheme.

The Great East Japan Earthquake triggered Japan’s interest to build renewable energy infrastructure and Japan’s feed-in-tariff scheme became effective from July 2012. Small Hydroelectric Generation is an environment-friendly business compares to Large-scale Hydroelectric Generation that needs the construction of dam and it draws attention as one of the highest potential power source among multiple power sources.

Mibugawa Power Company will take full advantage of the operation experience of the small hydro power plants, amicable relationship with Chino City and Takinoyu Dam Land Improvement District and hopes to contribute to Chino City’s future town development plan through the development of the renewable energy projects that will utilize natural energy implicit in Chino City.

Marubeni started the operation of small hydro power plant from 2006 and this project is the 7th projects from then. Marubeni will proactively work on the production of renewable energy in Japan and targets to develop around 30 small and medium-sized hydro power plants by 2020.
