SmartestEnergy Launches Retail Power Business in Texas

Feb. 19, 2026
Marubeni Corporation

Marubeni Corporation (hereinafter, “Marubeni”) has launched a retail power business aimed at corporate clients in Texas, USA (hereinafter, the “Project”), through SmartestEnergy US LLC (hereinafter, “SEUS”), a wholly owned subsidiary of SmartestEnergy Limited (hereinafter, “SEL”), which is headquartered in the United Kingdom and engaged in the wholesale and retail power business. SEUS has historically focused its operations on the deregulated power markets of the Northeastern United States. With this Project, SEUS has successfully expanded its footprint to establish coverage across all U.S. states where power markets have been deregulated.

The State of Texas, which is experiencing some of the fastest population and economic growth in the United States, is seeing a robust increase in power demand. Annual demand is approximately 370 billion kWh (approximately 370 TWh), exceeding the total power demand of the United Kingdom—where SEL is based—of approximately 320 billion kWh (approximately 320 TWh). In addition, Texas is witnessing rapid expansion in the deployment of renewable energy to support this growing demand, alongside a rising need for supply-demand balancing, including battery storage. As Texas is a market where SEUS can leverage its trading and risk management capabilities, the state is positioned as a key strategic region for future growth.

SEL, established in the United Kingdom in 2000, operates across the value chain from wholesale and retail power supply to trading, and is the third-largest provider in the U.K. commercial and industrial power services market, with a 10% market share. SEUS, founded in 2019, has expanded its business primarily in the Northeastern United States by offering services tailored to diverse customer needs, including green power. Since its establishment, SEUS’s customer base has been growing at an annual rate of more than 100%. Furthermore, in November 2025, the company received a Supplier of the Year award* from TEPA, a leading U.S. energy industry association, demonstrating that, in just five years since its founding, the company has grown into a supplier highly regarded by its customers.

SEUS has now opened a new office in Houston, Texas, where it will place locally hired market specialists. By also leveraging SEL’s expertise as a major power retailer for data center operators in the United Kingdom, SEUS aims to provide high-value-added services aligned with customer needs in Texas and to expand the supply of renewable energy to high-tech companies and data centers.

Under its Mid-Term Management Strategy GC2027, Marubeni is focusing on Strategic Platform Businesses (businesses with “Growth Domains x High Added Value x Scalability”), as well as on capturing the domestic demand of the massive U.S. market. This Project involves refining and expanding the wholesale and retail power business, which is one such strategic platform business. Through this Project, Marubeni aims to enhance corporate value by promoting and expanding its retail power business in the U.S., where demand is expected to increase going forward.

*SEUS received the Supplier of the Year award at the TEPA National Conference 2025 hosted by The Energy Professionals Association (TEPA), an energy industry association comprised of over 150 companies and more than 10,000 members operating in U.S. states with deregulated power markets.
