Marubeni, through its equity participation in GoldlinQ Holdings Pty Ltd. (hereinafter, “GoldlinQ”), commenced passenger services on August 9, 2026 of “Stage 3” (hereinafter, the “Project”), an expansion section of the light rail system in the Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. With the commencement of Stage 3 operations, all sections of the Gold Coast Light Rail project awarded to GoldlinQ are now in operation.
Background and SignificanceGoldlinQ was initially awarded the concession for a Public-Private Partnership (hereinafter, “PPP”) from the Queensland Government in 2011, which includes responsibility for the integrated delivery of design, construction, financing, operations, and maintenance of the light rail system in the City of Gold Coast. Stages 1 & 2 of Gold Coast Light Rail have established the system as a reliable public transport option for residents and visitors. In August 2025, the system recorded a cumulative total of 100 million paid passenger journeys, underscoring its role as an important transport asset and an iconic infrastructure project for the Gold Coast and Australia*.
Overview of the ProjectGoldlinQ was awarded the PPP concession for Stage 3 in 2022 and, in line with Stages 1 & 2, is responsible for the integrated delivery of design, construction, financing, operations, and maintenance of the expansion. Stage 3 extends the existing light rail network by 6.7 kilometres from Broadbeach South Station to Burleigh Heads, adding eight stations along the coastal corridor. The completion of Stage 3 brings the total Gold Coast Light Rail network to approximately 27 kilometres and 27 stations.The Project also includes associated work to improve connectivity and urban amenities, including new light rail and bus interchange facilities at Burleigh Heads and Miami, upgrades to signalised intersections, improved pedestrian crossings, and enhanced pedestrian and cycling facilities. This work and improved amenities are expected to improve transport access for communities along the corridor and further enhance convenience for residents and visitors.In addition, the Stage 3 work includes the upgrade and relocation of water, sewerage, power, and telecommunications infrastructure along the light rail line. This work represents important infrastructure improvements for the long-term development and growth of the Gold Coast.
Future OutlookThrough its equity participation in GoldlinQ, Marubeni has supported the development of the Gold Coast Light Rail project from Stage 1 through to the commencement of Stage 3 passenger services. Marubeni has also continued to participate in infrastructure PPP projects in Australia through its investment in the Sydney Metro Northwest Line and the Sydney Metro City & Southwest Line, collectively known as the M1 Line. Marubeni will continue to draw on the knowledge and experience it has accumulated through various projects to contribute to the infrastructure sector.
*In 2019, Marubeni’s shares in GoldlinQ in relation to Stages 1 & 2, and its shares in NRT Pty Ltd., which operates the Sydney Metro Northwest Line, were acquired by the MM Capital Infrastructure Fund I, L.P., an infrastructure fund managed by MM Capital Partners Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of Marubeni.
