Marubeni has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Hyosung Heavy Industries (hereinafter, “Hyosung”), a South Korean heavy electric equipment manufacturer, and Skeleton Technologies (hereinafter, “Skeleton”), an Estonian developer and manufacturer of next-generation energy storage solutions in which Marubeni has invested. The MOU pertains to the joint development (hereinafter, the “Development”) of “E-STATCOM,” a next-generation power grid stabilization system, marking the first initiative of its kind in South Korea.
Project OverviewE-STATCOM is a next-generation power grid stabilization solution that combines Hyosung’s “STATCOM*1” reactive power compensation technology with Skeleton’s Supercapacitor*2-based high-voltage energy storage system (hereinafter, “HV Rack”). By storing and instantaneously releasing high-output power, the system can instantly suppress voltage and frequency fluctuations caused by variable renewable energy output or fluctuating demand from facilities such as data centers, thereby achieving power grid stabilization. Marubeni will support product development by supplying HV Racks to Hyosung, aiming for commercialization sometime in the year 2027.
Background and SignificanceIn recent years, in addition to the increasing volatility of power supply due to the expansion of renewable energy, the construction and expansion of data centers driven by the widespread adoption of generative AI have led to an increase in cases where power demand fluctuates significantly over short periods. To address this issue of “power demand in the AI era,” technologies that maintain power quality even during supply-demand fluctuations and strengthen the power grid are indispensable. The Development contributes to both the promotion of decarbonization and the development of power infrastructure supporting AI and digital foundations.
Future OutlookSince investing in Skeleton in 2021, Marubeni has served as a strategic partner, acting as a distributor in Asia. For this Development, Marubeni will collaborate on supply and sales aspects to support commercialization not only in South Korea but also with a view toward expanding into overseas markets, such as the United States, where the need for power grid stabilization is rising alongside increasing power demand for data centers.
*1 STATCOM (Static Synchronous Compensator): A device connected to power transmission and distribution networks to stabilize voltage by controlling reactive power at high speeds.*2 Supercapacitor: Also known as an Electric Double Layer Capacitor (EDLC). An extremely safe energy storage device with very low internal resistance, enabling rapid charging and discharging at high currents. It possesses a long lifespan capable of lasting through one million charge/discharge cycles.
