Marubeni has acquired a 100% stake in Beams, Inc. (hereinafter, “Beams”), a company involved in the import and sales of laser oscillators*¹ and laser processing equipment*² (hereinafter, the “Acquisition”).

Background

• The rapid expansion of demand for artificial intelligence (AI) and data centers has precipitated a need for the miniaturization of circuit pattern designs in cutting-edge semiconductors to process large volumes of data. Semiconductor manufacturing equipment, which is essential for the production of these cutting-edge semiconductors, is an area in which Japanese manufacturers are globally competitive, while global demand for such semiconductor manufacturing equipment is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 10.6% through 2029*³.
• The need for higher precision in material processing, machining, and measurement is growing alongside the increasing sophistication of machines in a wide range of industries, including the automotive, aerospace, and medical fields. The use of laser technology, which is capable of quickly processing a variety of materials, is meanwhile also becoming increasingly important.

Beams’ strengths

• Beams handle a wide range of globally competitive laser oscillators, notably boasting the industry’s top market share in the laser oscillators essential for manufacturing cutting-edge semiconductors of 7nm or below.
• Beams owns laboratory facilities equipped with specialized processing equipment which enables them to provide prototype processing. Beams offer an integrated support of Prototype processing, sales, and maintenance to meet the need for high precision in material processing, machining, and measurement.

Future prospects

In its Mid-Term Management Strategy (GC2027), Marubeni is focusing on Strategic Platform Investments (businesses with “Growth Domains x High Added Value x Scalability”). The Acquisition will build on the knowledge and track record Marubeni has accumulated through expanding its product lineup and customer base in the industrial machinery field, and enable the company to create high added value through proposals and sales tailored to customer needs in the growing semiconductor and related business. Marubeni aims to further expand its business in the semiconductor manufacturing equipment and industrial laser markets, both of which industries are expected to grow significantly in the future.
