Marubeni has invested in Nguyet Minh 2 Trading-Services-Environment Joint Stock Company (hereinafter, “NM2”), which operates an aluminum recycling business in the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (hereinafter, “Vietnam”).
Business EnvironmentVietnam is the number one consumer of beverage cans in Southeast Asia, and the amount of aluminum scrap generated is expected to increase in the future due to the expansion of middle-income demographics. In addition, due to the recent increase in environmental awareness, the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)* has been implemented in Vietnam, and the country is working on the social issue of realizing a resource-circulating economy.
OverviewNM2 is an EPR-certified recycler in Vietnam that melts a wide variety of aluminum scrap, mainly beverage cans, to produce recycled aluminum ingots. Recycled aluminum ingots, which are made from aluminum scrap, a valuable resource, emit only 3% of the greenhouse gases produced during production compared to the production of new aluminum ingots, and demand is increasing rapidly in response to the growing need to reduce the environmental impact.
Future OutlookIn its Mid-term Management Strategy “GC2024”, Marubeni has positioned the green strategy as one of its basic policies for enhancing corporate value, and classifies the aluminum business, which is essential for the transition to a decarbonized society, as a green business. By expanding NM2’s business through this investment, Marubeni aims to realize a resource-circulating economy in Vietnam, ensure a stable medium- to long-term supply of recycled aluminum ingots with low environmental impact, and contribute to a sustainable society.
