Marubeni Corporation (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Masumi Kakinoki, hereinafter, “Marubeni”) and Hokuhoku Financial Group, Inc. (Head Office: Toyama City, Toyama Prefecture; President: Hiroshi Nakazawa, hereinafter, “Hokuhoku FG”) will co-host joint exhibitions in the summer of 2025 at the Marubeni Gallery (located within the Marubeni Head Office Building) operated by Marubeni, and the Galerie Millet (Toyama City, Toyama Prefecture) operated by Hokuriku Bank in the Hokuhoku FG, with the aim of supporting post-disaster recovery and reconstruction in the Noto Peninsula, which experienced a massive earthquake on January 1, 2024. All proceeds from the exhibition admission fees will be donated to recovery and reconstruction efforts.
Exhibition Overview
The Marubeni Gallery: “The Splendor and Sophistication of Yuzen Dyeing Techniques: The Essence of Yuzen Dyeing in the Marubeni Collection”
Marubeni will unveil a selection of masterpieces produced with Edo-period (1603–1868) yuzen dyeing techniques from its collection, including yuzen-dyed hanging scrolls created in the first half of the 18th century in the historical Kanazawa castle town area (including parts of the present-day Noto region), considered to be the pinnacle of yuzen dyeing techniques. The fifth feudal lord of the Kaga Maeda clan, Maeda Tsunanori, attempted to promote local industries by inviting various craftsmen from Kyoto, which was then the center of craftsmanship, to bring their techniques to the area. Yuzen dyeing, which later came to be known as “Kaga Yuzen,” is thought to be one of these, with its high level of skill being passed down to the present day. Among the artworks created, the yuzen-dyed hanging scrolls are presumed to have been presented by the Kaga domain to the shogunate and feudal lords across Japan, making them invaluable artifacts that serve as historical archives.

Galerie Millet: “Special Exhibition: Weaving Culture for the Noto Reconstruction Support - A Message from Hokuriku -”
The Galerie houses and displays works by Millet and other Barbizon School painters, as well as by Realism pioneer Courbet, in its permanent collection. In an adjoining special exhibition room, works by artists associated with Toyama are displayed regardless of genre, including paintings, photographs, prints, and sculptures, offering exhibitions that are closely connected to the local community. This special exhibition will showcase works with a focus on Kaga Yuzen dyeing techniques and introduce the culture and daily life of the Noto area, promoting the appeal of the Hokuriku region straight from the heart of Toyama City.

Marubeni is engaged in the operation of the Marubeni Gallery and the restoration of important cultural properties as part of the “Culture and Tradition” pillar of the company’s social contribution activities. Additionally, Hokuriku Bank operates Galerie Millet as part of its Management Philosophy of “Prospering together with the region” with the aim of creating vibrancy in the central area of Toyama City and promoting art and culture. In response to the January 2024 Noto earthquake, Marubeni and Hokuhoku FG jointly dispatched volunteers to support recovery and reconstruction operations in the area. Based on the input from the local community and related parties, Marubeni and Hokuhoku FG considered further forms of support they could provide, which led to the co-hosting of these joint special exhibitions utilizing their respective galleries.
Going forward, Marubeni and Hokuhoku FG will continue to deepen their partnership to support the recovery and reconstruction of the Noto Peninsula.
