Jun. 23. 2021
Marubeni Corporation

In June 2021, sales started for sneakers that use cellulose nanofiber (*1) "nanoforest®". This product is jointly developed and marketed by Marubeni and Chuetsu Pulp Co., Ltd. (hereinafter, “Chuetsu”).

The cellulose nanofiber “nanoforest®” is incorporated as an additive in the rubber sole of the sneaker. The models that have the “nanoforest®” sole are the “SPINGLE MOVE” SPM-172 and SPM-295, a shoe brand by Spingle Company Co.,Ltd. (*2) which is a handmade shoes manufacturer located in Fuchu City, Hiroshima Prefecture.

The use of “Rubear cellulose nanofiber soles”, in which bio-material is compounded into the rubber, improves wear resistance by 40% as compared with conventional rubber soles, making the soles in these shoes both earth-friendly and durable.

Marubeni will continue to develop further practical applications in the cellulose nanofiber business field with Chuetsu.

(*1) Cellulose nanofiber (CNF) is made from plant fiber (pulp) which is defibrated into nanometer (Nano = 1/1000000000). Although the material is derived from plant fibers, it is five times stronger than iron and steel.

(*2) A handmade shoes manufacturer located in Fuchu City, Hiroshima Prefecture that designs, manufactures, and sells sneakers. Their sneakers are popular and comfortable, which they have achieved by researching Japanese foot shapes.
