Investment in Structural Health Monitoring System Provider, Acellent Technologies, Inc.

Oct. 09. 2018
Marubeni Corporation

On October 4th, Marubeni Corporation (hereinafter, "Marubeni") invested in Acellent Technologies, Inc. (hereinafter, "Acellent"), which designs, develops and sells sensor network based structural health monitoring systems (hereinafter, "SHM system").

The SHM system is a technology for real-time monitoring of structural (e.g. transportation machinery, machinery equipment, infrastructure etc.) changes such as damage and deterioration of structures. Recently, frequent occurrences of collapse and breakage due to aging of transportation equipment such as railroads, large production facilities, power plants, and social infrastructure are becoming a serious problem. In light of these problems, Marubeni has focused its attention on Acellent's SHM system, which monitors and runs predictive maintenance on various structures in real time.

Originating in Stanford University, Acellent has developed an attachable sensor layer called “SMART Layer” and a highly accurate analysis technique that eliminates noise in high vibration environments. They have made it possible to use the SHM system in the transport machinery and machinery equipment fields which have thus far been considered difficult fields in which to apply this sort of technology.

Acellent's SHM system is already a standard in the aviation industry, and has conducted numerous collaborative projects with Boeing, Airbus and others. Additionally, they have conducted joint development in several other industries such as industrial machinery, construction machinery, and pipelines.

In utilizing Acellent's technology together with Marubeni’s worldwide network to develop applications for all kinds of structures, Marubeni strives for a “safe and secure” social environment.
