In accordance with the spirit of the Company Creed of “Fairness , Innovation , and Harmony ,” the Marubeni Group is proudly committed to social and economic development and safeguarding the global environment by conducting fair and upright corporate activities.
The company will celebrate its 160th anniversary in 2018. Looking back on our activities over the years reveals a repeated series of self-reforms aimed at becoming a company that provides value to society, resulting in the formation of the general trading company (sogo shosha) that we have become today. Technology advances and innovation lead to competitive advantages, and promote a renewed awareness of the need for the ability to transform ourselves. When standing at a turning point, in order to draw an image of the future, we must shift to new ways of thinking. One example is the start of initiatives to discuss how the Group should be operating 10 years from now, and to identify the issues, starting with idea of a sogo shosha as a business platform that transcends organizations and groups. In order to survive in times of uncertainty, it is important to have a positive attitude, and to embrace the times of change as opportunities.
In the world today, we are seeing the appearance of various problems that threaten the sustainability of the global environment and society. Among these problems are issues that are closely related to the sustainability of corporate activities, such as the response to the climate change, the shift to low-carbon society, and preservation of biodiversity, as well as human rights in business and risk management in supply chains. To address these challenges, global frameworks for sustainability are being established, including the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015, and the Paris Agreement that entered into force in 2016. Marubeni announced support for UN Global Compact in 2012, and has continued efforts to fulfill the responsibilities of a corporation toward the environment and society , and enhance the corporate value. As these efforts proceed, we are considering how to incorporate global change for sustainability into our operation and management as ESG issues, with an awareness that we are approaching the time it will be necessary to act.
A specific measure includes the reorganization of the CSR & Environment Committee in April 2018 to further strengthen the efforts on ESG issues, becoming the Sustainability Management Committee, under the direct management of the President. This committee will discuss the basic policies and measures related to our efforts on ESG issues, including the identification of materiality and periodic reviews. In addition, there will be three outside directors and auditors attending these meetings as advisors to provide an external point of view.
As the global activity on sustainability of the global environment and society continues to accelerate, there is a need to continuously review the operations and approach of the Marubeni Group from the perspective of society and stakeholders, and to continuously make improvements. We will continue to do our best to earn the trust of all stakeholders by working diligently on the issues that we of the Marubeni Group recognize as our responsibility to resolve.
