Marubeni identifies issues of significant importance to our company (hereafter, “material issues”) based on the expectations and concerns of stakeholders, as well as the impact of the company activities. The sustainability action plan and goals clarify the relationship between the material issues and the planning and targets of each division, and the implementation progress is checked regularly. In order to clearly communicate our efforts to stakeholders, our Sustainability Action Plan & Targets is publically disclosed, in accordance with the 17 goals specified as “Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).”

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

SDGs are shared goals of the international community aiming to achieve “sustainable development” in society, the economy and the environment. Sustainable Development Goals were adopted by the United Nations in 2015, and include 17 goals with 169 specific targets to be achieved by 2030. Marubeni supports the Sustainable Development Goals.

    Made good use of the group’s grain network owned by Marubeni, such as the origination functions of Gavilon Agriculture Investment, Inc. and Columbia Grain International, LLC., and the export terminals facilities of Terlogs Terminal Maritimo Ltda. and Pacificor, LLC, to export grain to Japan and other countries all over the world, and contributed to a stable supply of grains. We will continue to increase the trading volume and develop our global markets, while also cultivating new harvesting areas and strengthening procurement.

    FY2017 Performance

    Made good use of the Group’s grain network owned by Marubeni, such as the pickup functions of Gavilon Agriculture Investment, Inc. and Columbia Grain, Inc., and the export shipping facilities of Terlogs Terminal Maritimo Ltda. and Pacificor, LLC, to export grain to Japan and other countries around the world, and contributed to providing a stable supply of food.

    To ensure the compliance of “Basic Supply Chain CSR Policy” such as human rights and work environments at our suppliers, Marubeni-related personnel conducted hearings on site.
    Marubeni will continue the surveys to check human rights and working conditions at the suppliers, and urge for improvements when needed.

    FY2017 Performance

    The Food Products Division works on requesting new suppliers to comply with “Basic Supply Chain CSR Policy.”
    The Lifestyle Division ensures that the responsible personnel at the head office, the three overseas subsidiaries providing QC (quality control), and overseas branches, hold hearings and confirm the CSR situation when they visit the supplier (especially the production plant).

    We thoroughly manages the quality of import products instructed by the QC subsidiary companies, and minimizes the occurrence of defective products.
    We will continue to minimize defective products by a thorough QC. We will also consider their use as valuable resource.

    For FY2017, the amount of waste (determined by weight) from defective products increased 71% from the previous year due to transient factor.

    Based on experience, past performance, data, and research, we offer consistent solutions from logistic design to operation, and contribute to providing a more efficient transportation by building a logistic strategy making operational reforms for the clients.
    We will further promote the existing business, while also developing new markets.

    FY2017 Performance

    In March 2017, together with Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd., we began the social experiment “Vehicle operation management support service via the ETC2.0 system,” a public offering by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism. We were able to accomplish many things as a result of this experiement, including achieving visualization of transportation efficiency in specific areas.

    When purchasing land, we conduct surveys on land history based on the soil contamination survey policy, and check for its contamination. If any contamination is found, soil improvement measures will be taken.
    When newly purchasing land, we will take appropriate measures according to the soil contamination survey policy and the Soil Contamination Countermeasures Act.

    When purchasing land, the relevant sites were investigated to confirm that there was no concern of soil contamination.

    We will adopt Energy-saving features (double glazing, water-saving toilets, LED use for communal areas, etc.) in condominiums to be sold in Japan, and promote the sales of environment-friendly housing.
    Marubeni will actively promote energy-saving features for future projects.

    Action Plan and Targets for FY2017

    Helena Agri-Enterprises, LLC conducted service operations under the AGRIntelligence brand in the precision farming area, which utilize IT technology. Through Helena’s new technology, Marubeni offered attentive service in response to the needs of the farmers, and contributed to increasing productivity.
    Marubeni will continue to work on Helena’s existing business in the U.S., and make use of the knowhow and experience earned through Helena to seek for new projects outside the U.S.

    In addition to being involved in the ongoing businesses and projects of U.S. company Helena Agri-Enterprises, LLC Marubeni also uses its product lines, knowledge and experience to develop industrial sales that are connected to the improvement of productivity in Asia and Europe.

    By selling and promoting environment-friendly functional fertilizers, Marubeni contributed to greatly decreasing the amount of chemical fertilizers used, and helped to reduce greenhouse gas (nitrous oxide) emissions.
    Marubeni will continue to promote the sales and new shipment of functional fertilizers, and contribute to reducing greenhouse gases.

    We continue to ship functional fertilizers with low risk of environment pollution, mainly to China and Southeast Asia.

    By utilizing the ISO 14001 environmental management system, Marubeni gained information on domestic and international chemical regulations and took appropriate measures, while also sharing information with subsidiaries through audit and information investigation.
    Marubeni will stay informed of domestic and international chemical regulations, and take appropriate responses, while also sharing the information with the subsidiary companies for a complete control.

    Marubeni acted in accordance with changes in domestic and international chemical regulations, and also shared information with its subsidiaries in order to manage and reduce environmental risks.

    In addition to trading of raw materials and parts for photovoltaic (PV) module, solar panel, we increased our handling of inverter batteries etc. and promoted sales of photovoltaic power generation.
    With the current trading of raw materials and parts for solar cell modules as the foundation, Marubeni will work to develop new businesses in photovoltaic generation and contribute to promoting renewable energy.

    For the handling of solar cell modules, we expect to achieve 200 MW in FY2017, and contribute to promoting renewable energy.

    Through its subsidiaries, the Marubeni Group conducted waste paper recycling. Waste paper from the group and partner companies are collected through Marubeni Paper Recycle Co., Ltd., and made into recycled paper products at Marubeni Group paper manufacturers such as Koa Kogyo Co., Ltd. and Fukuyama Paper Co, Ltd. to be reused.
    Marubeni will continue its existing business, while also seeking to develop new business partners.

    Through its subsidiaries, the Marubeni Group conducted waste paper recycling.     Marubeni began the afforestation project in the 1990s, and currently manages 210,000 ha of land for afforestation for four projects in three countries.
    Marubeni will continue to work on the proper management of the projects, and carry out sustainable forest management.

    We have maintained proper management of our afforestation projects. As for our one project in Australia, we have finished the harvest, and completed the project according to our plan.

    As part of the participation in metal resources development projects, Marubeni monitored the maintenance and management methods of the major partners, and whether the approvals, licenses, and laws were being complied with.
    In the existing metal resources development projects, management through monitoring will be ensured, while also urging major partners to take action when needed.

    We closely monitored the management and operation of the metal resources development projects in which we are involved; no serious environment-related problems occurred.

    Promoting renewable energy (Power Business Division)

    Action Plan and Targets for FY2017

    We will actively promote development and investment in large renewable energy generation projects (land/off-shore wind, solar, micro hydropower, geothermal and biomass) and EPC in Japan and abroad. We will also contribute by promoting renewable energy through sales of electric power from renewable energy sources in the Power Producer & Supplier (PPS) business in Japan, and the power service business (aggregation/retail) overseas.

    FY2017 Performance

    In Japan, we developed a biomass power generation project in Tsuruga, Fukui Prefecture, and a photovoltaic power project in Tomakomai, Hokkaido Prefecture, and began commercial operation of both.
    Overseas, we began commercial operation of a photovoltaic power project in Chile, and became involved in a geothermal power project in Indonesia. In UAE, we are currently constructing one of the world's largest photovoltaic power plants (to be completed in 2019). As for EPC, we are working on a geothermal plant construction project, currently being implemented in Indonesia.

    In addition to managing our portfolio assets, we will accelerate development of renewable energy projects in Japan and overseas. Additionally, we will actively work on developing related businesses using storage batteries for further promotion of renewable energy.
    Also, in our Power Producer & Supplier (PPS) projects in Japan, and our power service project in the U.K., we will contribute to promoting renewable energy by supplying power and energy from sources including renewably generated ones.

    Our Approach

    Promoting renewable energy / Preserving biodiversity / Utilizing unused natural resources (Power Business Division)

    Action Plan and Targets for FY2017

    Since 2006 in Japan, through Mibugawa Power Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Marubeni, we operate 15 power plants in Nagano, Yamanashi, Fukushima and Hiroshima Prefectures by distributed micro hydro plants which have minimal impact on the environment by mobilizing regional water resources.
    Marubeni intends to contribute to regional economies through the safe and stable operation of our existing power plants, and through community-based development and operation.

    FY2017 Performance

    Mibugawa Power Company, a wholly owned subsidiary of Marubeni, smoothly operates 15 small hydropower plants in Nagano, Yamanashi, Fukushima and Hiroshima Prefectures, and also began commercial operation of the new Tateshina No.3 and No. 4 Power Stations in Nagano Prefecture, contributing to the local community.

    Through the safe and steady operation of Mibugawa Power Company's small hydropower plants (18 sites), we will contribute to the development of local economies, and also continue efforts to create more projects.     Building the social infrastructure for the basis of living / Improving and stabilizing the living standards of the local community (Power Business Division)

    Action Plan and Targets for FY2017

    Through our IPP, EPC, O&M, power service (power retailing/aggregation), and regulated power businesses in Japan and overseas, we will contribute to the structuring of social infrastructure and sustainable development of local communities. Marubeni's overseas net generating capacity was 10,273 MW as of the end of March 2017. Based on our "saftey first" priority concept, we will conduct safe and secure operation of our existing projects, and also aim to develop new projects.

    FY2017 Performance

    Marubeni's overseas net generating capacity has expanded to 11,765 MW in 23 countries as of the end of March 2018. Through expansion in business regions in the power service and regulated power businesses, we are working on stabilizing power systems, reducing environmental impact by diversifying fuel, and strengthening our business base.

    Marubeni has built a well-balanced water asset portfolio in the Americas, China, Asia, Europe and Australia, ranging from water/sewage BOT/BOO projects, concessions, EPCs to O&Ms.
    Marubeni manages its portfolio, ensuring the assets' sustainable operations and their improvement, while originating new development opportunities.

    FY2017 Performance

    Maynilad in the Philippines, in which Marubeni has a 20% stake, signed a loan agreement with Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) and Japanese private banks to fund water supply expansion and non-revenue water measures.
    Additionally, the BOT project for waterworks bureau of Chengdu City in China, in which Marubeni has a 40% stake, reached maturity after 18 years, and the water purification plant was turned over to Chengdu City. With the stable operation of our existing projects, we improved our corporate value. We continued development towards establishing new projects and EPCs.

    Marubeni has developed multiple EPC projects, including railway systems and industrial plants, e.g. pulp/paper, sugar and textile facilities in South and Southeast Asia, Central America, Middle East and Africa. The Thai Metropolitan Railway Project is now under construction where Marubeni is providing maintenance services as well as project management of the project.
    While implementing existing projects is critical for Marubeni, we are also active in promoting project management/maintenance businesses, that are combination of EPC and post-completion services, e.g. O&M services for plants and transportation systems.

    FY2017 Performance

    ・We received an order for the industrial waste incinerator/power generation plant which contributes to the proper disposal/energy conversion of industrial waste in Thailand.
    ・In Thailand, we are working on a maintenance project after the opening of the Bangkok Purple Line urban transportation railway project (in which we undertook responsibility for construction and maintenance).
    ・In Myanmar, we received an order for the railcars used on the main line railroad, which contributes to reduced traffic problems and the development of the social economy.
    ・We joined the long-term chartering project for FPSO (Floating Production, Storage and Offloading System) for drilling deep sea oil/gas, the sixth vessel in Brazil.

    Marubeni conducted trading of solar cell manufacturing equipment and parts, sales of solar panels and systems, photovoltaic system installation business, and solar power generation business. Marubeni was appointed as the business operator for the mega-solar project in Miyagi Prefecture’s Iwanuma City, and began commercial operations in April 2015.

    We contributed to expanding the photovoltaic market by increasing new merchandise with improved power generating efficiency.
