OUR HISTORY

C. Itoh & Co. Chosabu-Jiho No. 1(November 20, 1916)
  • In 1858 (Ansei 5)*, Chubei Itoh (the first) moved out of the family business and together with his uncle, began a linen trading business.

  • On December 29, 1914 (Taisho 3), when C. Itoh & Co. was established, a Research Department was also established. The Research Department annex was set up on the site of a temporary store located at Azuchi-machi 2-chome, Higashi-ku, Osaka (at the time), and the department engaged in research, planning, and development while publishing the Chosabu-Jiho (see image on the left). In addition to introducing the current conditions of production areas for cotton, wool, and ramie fiber, the iron and machinery industries in the United States, as well as modern management, the Research Department also conducted research on Siberian development, among other things, directly linking these to practical business operations.
  • Following subsequent organizational restructuring of Marubeni Shoten, Sanko, Daiken Sangyo, and others, Marubeni Corporation was established in December 1949 (Showa 24).
  • In April 1978 (Showa 53), the Research Department was separated and established as an independent department, strengthening information and research functions.
  • In April 2000 (Heisei 12), the Research Department was renamed the Research Institute* and began operations as the Marubeni Research Institute.
    *In April 2024 (Reiwa 6), it was reorganized into the Global Planning & Coordination Department.
  • On August 1, 2024 (Reiwa 6), in order to strengthen the intelligence functions of the Marubeni Group, the new company, Marubeni Institute, was spun off in an evolutionary way from within Marubeni Corporation .
