Marubeni awarded Contract for EPC for one of the world's largest tropical Biomass and Clean Coal-Cogeneration plant by TP Utilities Pte. Ltd. in Singapore
Feb. 09. 2010
Tokyo, Japan, 8 February 2010 - Marubeni Corporation (“Marubeni”) has been awarded a Contract for EPC (Engineering, Procurement & Construction), worth approximately USD 250 million, for the Biomass and Clean Coal Cogeneration Plant by TP Utilities Pte. Ltd.(“TPU”), a subsidiary of Tuas Power Ltd, one of the major power companies in Singapore.
The Singapore government has been attracting petrochemical companies to the Tembusu area of Jurong Island, and TPU is building a utility complex to cater to the utility needs of such companies setting up industries in the Tembusu area. The mentioned cogeneration plant, which is the heart of the complex, is the first and largest of its kind in Singapore to employ a fuel mix of coal and tropical biomass (palm kernel shell) for the generation of utilities.
Marubeni has extensive experience in constructing cogeneration plants that utilize Circulation Fluidized Bed (CFB) boilers, a technology that is well adapted to the firing of diverse fuels, in various countries such as Japan, China and Thailand. A highly efficient CFB boiler with a capacity of 450t/h and a turbine generator of 101MW output will be installed for this plant, which will also be equipped with a backup boiler of 200t/h to enhance reliability of steam supply.
Tuas Power President and Chief Executive Officer Mr. Lim Kong Puay said, “We place great importance on the success of the Tembusu Multi-Utilities Complex and in this regard, we are pleased to forge a partnership with Marubeni, a reliable EPC contractor”.
Marubeni’s Executive Officer, COO, Plant, Ship & Industrial Machinery Division Mr. Shingo Tsuda said. “We have well experienced and extensive capability of EPC project, and will promise to fulfill the client’s expectations with our responsibility to successfully manage and execute the project”.
Steam will be made available to the customers in the second half of 2012 and construction of the plant is scheduled to be concluded by the end of 2012. TPU plans to complete the rest of the complex by 2014 and Marubeni is currently in discussion with TPU to finalize the expansion plan for the Tembusu Multi-Utilities Complex.
Through this project, Marubeni will seek future opportunities of constructing such power and cogeneration plants in South East Asia, an area with abundant tropical biomass.
