Silicon Valley / U.S.A.

Making Waves from the World's High-Tech Capital

Silicon Valley. On a map, there's no such town, city, or valley for that matter. But when you say the name, everyone knows you're talking about the high-tech capital of the world. Located about one hour's drive south of San Francisco, Silicon Valley is a region that centers on the cities of San Jose and Santa Clara. Marubeni America's Silicon Valley Branch opened in April 2004 as a result of the merger of four business groups ranging from San Francisco to the Silicon Valley area. The Digital Products and Medical Business Department, formerly at the San Francisco Branch, is engaged in new business development in various components of Digital Products, such as PC-related products, Digital Home Electronics, and Semiconductor Chips. The Non-Ferrous and Light Metal Products Department, formerly at the Sunnyvale Office, is engaged in various substrates for the semiconductor industry, such as hard disk related products, wafer polishing pads, gallium nitride wafers and LEDs (light-emitting diodes). The Electronic Materials Department, formerly known as Marubeni Specialty Chemicals' West Coast Office, is engaged in raw materials for the semiconductor industry, such as polycrystalline silicon, silicon and silicon-carbide wafers, wafer carrier boxes, and magnetic recording powder. Marubeni Solutions U.S.A. Corporation, engaged in IT-related Equipment/Software and Semiconductor Manufacturing-related Equipment/Software, is located in the same office. From September 2004, the new office also welcomes the Bio and New Materials Department, which is engaged in new business development and investment in bio-technology and other high-tech industries. This merger is a product of Marubeni America's strong initiative to horizontally unite the team across business groups.

Silicon Valley Business

The size of the California economy, in GDP terms, would be ranked sixth among the nations of the world ? nearly that of France or China. A key element of this economy is the Silicon Valley region, known to be the world capital of semiconductor and IT technologies. Marubeni America's Silicon Valley Branch is located next door to Intel's world headquarters, and is surrounded by other famous IT companies such as Sun Microsystems, Oracle, Hewlett Packard, and Apple Computer. Not nearly so well-known is that the region is also the birthplace of biotechnology ? Genentech, Inc. started up here 25 years ago. California has the most companies in the biotech industry, and more than half of them are located in the Bay Area. The concentration of renowned universities (Stanford University, UC Berkeley, and UC San Francisco) and the moderate climate, make Silicon Valley the perfect place for researchers and entrepreneurs, and Silicon Valley attracts one third of all venture capital investments in the United States. With this ideal environment as a backdrop, the staff at the Silicon Valley Branch is committed to becoming an integral resource for other Marubeni Group offices, departments, and affiliates, and to be a gateway to new technologies and new business opportunities.
