Dublin / Ireland

In Dublin's Fair City

"In Dublin's fair city,
Where girls are so pretty,
I first set my eyes on sweet Molly Malone,
As she pushed her wheelbarrow,
Through the streets broad and narrow,
Crying, 'Cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh!"

So opens "Molly Malone", one of the most famous songs of Dublin, Ireland. It is a tale of beauty and heartbreak, a description that could often have been used for Dublin itself since its founding by Vikings in 988 A.D. Over the last twenty years, however, Dublin has become the center of the Irish economic tiger, with business skyrocketing and unemployment plummeting. The gross national product (GNP) grew 5.5% in 2004, and it shows few signs of losing speed any time soon.
Having had an office in Dublin since 1975, Marubeni is well-positioned to take advantage of this boom. The current focus of the Dublin office is products related to hard disks (Metal Division) and dairy and marine products (Produce Division).

Marubeni's Dublin staff also have a wide selection of local culture to enjoy. Irish literature is rightfully famous, from the "Book of Kells", an ornately illustrated manuscript produced by Celtic monks around 800 A.D., to modern bestselling authors like Roddy Doyle. The years in between have seen such giants of the written word as Jonathan Swift, Thomas Moore, Oscar Wilde, George Bernard Shaw, William Butler Yeats, James Joyce, and Samuel Beckett. Plus, one of the earliest Western chroniclers of Japan, Lafcadio Hearn, was raised in Ireland.

In music, John Field, born in Dublin in 1782, is best remembered as the first composer to write nocturnes. More recently, U2 has become one of the biggest rock groups in the world. Traditional Irish music like "Molly Malone" also remains extremely popular and can be heard throughout the city.

On the sports field, Dubliners love great international sports like rugby, football, golf, and others. However, possibly the most passionately-followed sports for the Irish are native games such as hurling and Gaelic football. Hurling is similar to field hockey, played between two teams with a ball that can be struck or carried with a stick. Gaelic football is similar to standard football, but the players can handle and run with the ball in addition to kicking it.

In Dublin's fair city, the future looks much brighter for Ireland than for Molly Malone, and Marubeni will be there to help keep it that way.
