Beijing
In the Heart of China
From Taichi Kuribayashi, General Manager of the Metals Resources Dept. -II
"Beijing, the capital of the People's Republic of China, is the center of the nation's politics, culture, and international relations. It has a registered population of about 13 million, representing all 56 of China's ethnic groups, with an average life expectancy of 74 years. The springs and autumns are short, while the summers and winters are long, with January temperatures averaging -6.4° C and July temperatures averaging 29.6°C.
The Marubeni Beijing office opened in 1979, and moved three times before settling opposite Beijing Station. Although airplanes are becoming more and more frequently used within China, trains are still the main form of transportation for the people. The area around the Marubeni office is full of travellers carrying their bags, especially before major national holidays.
The most important role of the Beijing branch at this time is setting up a network which will allow Marubeni to easily trade within the domestic market. We are examining the potential of several commodities, looking for the best position in a nation which is still only barely open to foreign capital.
If you come to Beijing, I recommend that you visit the following two scenic spots. The best times to visit are spring or autumn.
First is the Great Wall, one of the greatest projects ever built by humanity. Construction of the Great Wall began during the Period of the Warring States (476-221 BC). At first, walls were only built at strategic points by different kingdoms to protect their northern territories. However, in 221 BC, after the first emperor of the Qin dynasty unified China, he decided to have the walls linked and extended. The Great Wall is located 75 kilometers northwest of Beijing, with its highest point at Badaling, 800 meters above sea level.
Second, you should visit the Forbidden City, especially the Palace Museum, which is also known as the Purple Forbidden City. It is the largest and most well-preserved imperial residence in China today. Under Ming Emperor Yongle, construction began in 1406, and took 14 years to complete. The first ruler to actually live there was Ming Emperor Zhudi. For the next five centuries, it was the residence of 23 successive emperors, until Qing Emperor Puyi was forced to abdicate the throne in 1911."
